Shaw, whilst a Bombardier, was Court Martialled at Catterick (Northern Command) on 6.11.1936. Charged with two offences under Section 20 of the 1881 Army Act. This offence is committed when someone "Wilfully or without reasonable excuse allows to escape any person who is committed to his charge, or when it is his duty to keep or guard." Having pleaded not guilty he was sentenced to Reduction in rank and Loss of Seniority 06/11/1934.
He recovered from this indiscretion and was commissioned ending the war as a Major.
