John Lowther Barton enlisted in the Scots Guards 7th January 1895, a 19 year old labourer from Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire. Served with 2nd Bn in the UK, transferred to Reserve 7th January 1898 and joined the Lancashire Constabulary, served 25 years as a Policeman. Recalled 9th October 1899, served in South Africa with 1st Bn 21st October 1899 to 17th April 1900 and 15th April 1902 to 21st July 1902. Transferred back to the Reserve 2nd September 1902. Returned to service as a Policeman. Finally disharged from the reserve 22nd July 1911. He volunteered 3 times to serve in WWI but was refused on grounds of usefulness in his roll in the Constabulary. Died aged 65 in 1941.
