Hubert Douglas Short a 20 year old clerk from Banbury in Oxfordshire enlisted in the Imperial Yeomanry on 21st January 1901 in Oxford. Served in South Africa with 78th Company (Rough Riders) from 22nd February 1901 until 15th August 1902 when he was discharged at Elandsfontein. His stated intention to join the Transvaal Police at Johanesburg.
