J6090 Able Seaman John Harold Carter was born in Wandsworth, London on 21.12.1893. He enlisted, officially, in the Royal Navy at Chatham on 21.12.1911 although he started earlier in November 1909. He was aboard Swiftsure during the Persian Gulf operations to put paid to gun running in the region and was awarded the NGSM with the relevant clasps. In WWI he served aboard Euralyus, Egmont, Penelope among others and transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve on 6.2.24. His service record indicates that he was recalled on 3.9.39, just before the WWII commenced.
