Burns was 18 when he attested for service with the 1st Bn Liverpool Regiment on 15.1.1897. He saw service in South Africa, before and after the Boer War - from 13.2.1898 until 6.11.1902 - before being sent to India.
He was in the Defence of Ladysmith where the Liverpool's played an important role in keeping the Boers at bay and also saw action at the battle of Bergendal (Belfast).
He was Wounded in Action (Slightly) at Middleburg on 26.10.1900 in the Eastern Transvaal but was able to return to duty.
