654373 SGT. Thomas Alfred Byles was born in Hackney, London in 1908. According to the 1911 England census he was living with his parents at Sofia, 16 Thornhill Road, West Croydon. His father was a Wood Heel Manufacturer.

He was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in 1932. The Croydon Times of 18 June 1932 reporting that "It was found at the hospital that Mr Byles had sustained compound fractures of the right arm, concussion, dislocation of the other arm, and cuts on face and forehead through broken glass."

According to AIR 78 27 1 (Royal Air Force Nominal Index of Airmen and Airwomen), Byles joined the R.A.F. as a civilian (Aircrafthand), after March 1938 and was later appointed as a Class F Reservist.

Twice married, he passed away at 13 Parry Road, Croydon, S.E.25 on 30.3.1970
