William George Ratcliffe was born in Battersea, London in 1868. He enlisted with the Metropolitan Police at Old Scotland Yard in 1888 and retired in 1919 at the age of 50 after 30 years service - having served in P,B &C Divisions. earning all Coro/Jubilee medals 1897 -1911. Confusingly, his 1897 medal is engraved to W.J. Ratcliffe but he was undoubtedly William George Ratcliffe.

The 1921 Census has him living at 54 Hazelbury Road, Fulham where he is a Police Constable with the Metropolitan Police. He passed away in Hounslow in 1932
