One of a series of medals issued by the HEIC for the First Afghan War of 1841-42. This issue features the Cabul reverse.

This features the more common CABUL reverse, versions are found with CABVL spelling although only approx 15 medals are known with this spelling, they also have the obverse Legend VICTORIA REGINA instead of VICTORIA VINDEX.

Approximately 3500 medals were issued to Europeans and 9241 were issued to native troops.
