Valentine Goode Johnson was born in Nottingham in 1879. A Medical Doctor he was commissioned into the RAMC in 1906 and served on the North West Frontier in 1908 and in WWI in France & Belgium before being invalided out on ill health grounds. He died in Salcombe Regis in 1924.

He was one of forty successful candidates who set the competitive examination held in London for commissions in the Royal Army Medical Corps for which seventy four candidates entered, coming 18th with 513 marks. He served in India on the North West Frontier and with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Belgium from where he was invalided and obliged to retire in 1920 on account of ill health.

On 30 Jan 1906 he was appointed Lieutenant RAMC on probation and was seconded up to 30 June 1906 and posted to Malta. On 1 July 1906 he was confirmed Lieutenant from the Seconded List. He was posted to Ghajn Tuffieha Camp North West Malta  whereafter, in April 1908 he was sent from Woolwich to Rawalpindi, serving in India until 1912.

In May 1908 he went from Rawalpindi to Nowshera and, in Dec 1908 from Nowshera to Peshawar where he earned his IGS medal. On 30 July 1909 he was promoted Captain with the RAMC. On 30 Oct 1909 at Essex Church, he married Dorothy Jacqueline, youngest daughter of Percy Preston, of 9 Randolph Road, Maida Hill, W. and Cotswold, Wickford, Essex.

Returning to India he was posted, in January 1910, from Peshawar to Nowshera. From 15 August 1914 he served with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Belgium before being invalided out. On 30 Jan 1918 he was promoted Major RAMC, only to be placed on placed on half-pay due to ill health on 2 March 1920

On 14 May 1924 he was retired from the half-pay list to retired pay on account of ill health, passing away a month later on 14 June 1924.
