Herbert Barber was born in Christchurch Lancashire in 1883 A Post Office employee for most of his life, he enlisted with the Royal Engineers in 1906 and served in WWI rising to the rank of Company Quartermaster Sergeant. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in the LG 3.9.1920 for Valuable service in India in connection with the war.
Returning to England he continued to serve in the GPO and was rewarded with the Imperial Service Medal on his retirement in 1942 at which point he was Assistant Superintendent of the Post Office in Lancaster and Morecambe.
He was a recipient of the 1935 Jubilee Medal
According to the 1939 Register he was living at 2 Warwick venue, Lancaster and was a Civil Servant/Asst. Supt. G.P.O. Lancaster. He was also a Senior Warden with the A.R.P.
