Henry Bell had a long and varied military career. He was born in Sefton Lancs in 1884 and attested for service with the 3/Northumberland Fusiliers in 1902 seeing service in South Africa in the Mounted Infantry (post Boer War). He was posted to the Army Reserve in 1905 but re-enlisted for service in WWI on 31 August 1914 seeing action in France from 2 February 1915. He was admitted to No.10 Casualty Clearing Station at Hazebrouck on 12 March 1915 with "Effects of cold (feet)."
He attested for service with the Royal Tank Corps, no. 4256945, on 7.3.1921 at the age of 34 seeing service in Iraq as an Acting Corporal and was discharged on 10.2.1923 on reduction of establishment and with an Exemplary Conduct rating. His address was c/o G.P.O. Newcastle. He also saw service in India and was, according to a letter he wrote regarding the award of a pension to the Defence Ministry, present during the Gandhi Rising.
According to the 1939 Register he was a Railway Porter (Heavy Goods) living at 32 White Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
