Henry Samuel Ellis served with the Natal Police. He was born in Plymouth Devon in 1877. He came to South Africa and enlisted with the Natal Police on 13.4.1901 at their Headquarters in Alexandria Road, Pietermaritzburg. He served in Natal during the Boer War and was discharged on 4 June 1904 at his won request with the option of re-joining within 6 months at his old rank. His character rating was Very Good.
He re-joined on 28 November 1904 and was appointed a Warder at the Durban Gaol. He served in the Bambatha Rebellion of 1906 and was transferred to Nqutu in Zululand. He renewed his service in 1907 and continued to serve with the Prisons Service after amalgamation in 1912.
He was awarded the Prisons Long Service & Faithful Conduct medal as a Head Warder in 1917 - the Orders are included in the papers provided. He died in Durban in 1931.
