The Medal was instituted in 1966 following the formation of the Abu Dhabi Defence Force under the guidance of officers from the Trucial Oman Scouts to be awarded for loyal service. It was discontinued following the incorporation of the Abu Dhabi Defence Force into the Federal Armed Forces of the United Arab Emirates in 1976.
