72920/64842 Pte. George Edward Strange was born in Hebburn-on-Tyne Newcastle in 1898. He enlisted with the 15th Durham Light Infantry with no. 72920 before transferring to the 9th Northumberland Fusiliers with no. 64842. He was Killed in Action in Merville France on 24.8.1918.
The Battalion War Diary described the day as follows:
"Heavy gas shelling during night of 23-24th , about 3.15 a.m. a 5.9 inch enemy shell entered the cellars where the commanding officer and adjutant were, but failed to explode and ended up on the bed on which the adjutant was sitting, but beyond bruises and scratches neither the commanding officer or adjutant were injured".
Strange would have been a casualty of the shelling that day. He is remembered on the Merville Community Cemetery and also on the Blaydon-on-Tyne war memorial.
