10622 Pte Thomas Mulrenan 4th SAI b 1900 Barrow in Furness Attested 11.1916 WIA Messines 11.4.1918 Lay in open for 4 days before found & taken POW
Thomas Mulrenan lied about his age claiming to have been born in 1897. He was initially discharged as underage and attested again in November 1916. He joined his unit in the field on 29.10.1917 and, having suffered damage to his right toes, was sent to England for treatment. He returned to the field in France on 2.4.1918 and after only 2 weeks, was WIA at Messines on 13.4.1918.
An interesting story is revealed in the questionnaire he completed for Medical Board purposes wherein he stated that, "I am suffering the effects of a GSW through the Right Lung received in action Messines 11 April 1918. Also suffer from the effects of trench feet which has caused clawed toes in left foot - contracted whilst wounded, laying in the open for four days at Messines 15.4.1918. He was left lying wounded on the battlefield and only found 4 days later whereupon he was taken POW.
He was operated on at various hospitals in Germany and, on recovery, was sent to neutral Switzerland for repatriation.
