Casper Vashon Baker was born in South Stoneham Hants in 1890. Having qualified after 4 years of private study he was appointed an Engineer Lt in the Royal Navy in 1910. His career was almost jeopardised by defective eyesight (he was short-sighted) but this was remedied with the correct spectacles and his career took off. He served in the Home Fleet in WWI aboard ships Barham Commonwealth & Menace and his service record is littered with references to his sterling abilities and good qualities.
At some point after the war he was seconded to New Zealand to assist with the creation of their navy. According to the 1939 Register Baker was an Engineer Commander at an RN Base living at 8 Nettlecombe Avenue, Portsmouth.
He retired in 1940 but was called upon to resume his role and, having seen out WWII, reverted to the Retired List in August 1947.
He died at Gosport, Hants in 1971
