John Carl Hager served with the 5th South Africa Infantry in German East Africa. He was born in Johannesburg, Transvaal in 1895 and attested for service on 16.9.1916. A Clerk on the South African Railways, he was posted to German East Africa on 24.10.1916and, like so many, contracted Malaria.
On 30.4.1918 he was attached to the Staff of the Military Landing Officer in German East Africa and was finally discharged on 20.3.1919
He returned for service on 4.11.1940 in WWII as part of the Active Citizen Force, attached to the 1st Bn. National Volunteer Brigade (Home service) and was discharged as Medically Unfit on 13.4.1944 with the rank of Sergeant.
He died in Johannesburg on 12 April 1984
