Robert Brown was born in Newcastle in 1871. When he enlisted with the Royal Engineers on 19 August 1915 he claimed to have had prior service with the Newcastle Volunteer Engineers - taking his discharge in 1895. He was already 44 years of age and was appointed a Company Sergeant Major from the outset
He was posted to France on 26 August 1915 and was Mentioned in General Haig's despatch of the 13 June 1916 for gallant and distinguished conduct in the field. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers in the LG of 28 January 1917 and was released from service not long afterwards.
His address at the time his medals were sent to him was 3 Plessey Road, New Delaval, Newcastle.
