The Natal Light Horse suffered a number of casualties in what was probably the seminal battle of the German South West Africa campaign - the battle of Gibeon in April 1915 when Royston positioned his men incorrectly preparatory to an attack on the station where the Germans had mustered in strength with the intention of taking the last train away from there.
The Germans opened fire and caught the NLH in an exposed position which resulted in a number of casualties.
Ely went on to serve in German East Africa in 1916.
