Herbert Charles Owles was born in Durban, Natal in 1910. He enlisted for service in WWII with the 2nd Divisional Signal Company, South African Corps of Signals on 18 October 1940 and, having been sent to North Africa/Middle East, was taken Prisoner of War when General Kloppers surrendered the garrison at Tobruk ON 21/21.6.1942.
He was held at various Campos in Italy until that country capitulated in September 1943 whereafter he was taken to Germany and held at Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf. He was not put to work while a POW but would appear to have been on the Long March March/April 1945 when the Germans force marched their prisoners westwards away from the approaching Russian Army with many hundreds dying from exposure and lack of food.
He suffered with Bronchitis and Pneumonia which he blamed on the lack of heating in his Released POW Questionnaire.
