1135821 Air Gunner (Sgt.) Amos Ryder Maddison was born in Sunderland on 6.5.1922. According to the 1939 Register he was a 20 year old Solicitor's Clerk living with his widowed mother at 42 Yewtree Avenue, Sunderland. Joining the R.A.F. V.R. after the commencement of WWII, he was attached to 426 Squadron, Bomber Command, operating from Dishforth in Yorkshire.

Flying as a Rear Gunner in Wellington's with the Royal Canadian Air Force 426 Squadron - the "Thunderbirds" - he was over Lorient on a cloud-cover raid to Leer, a French port being used as a U-Boat base, as part of a flight of 7 Wellington's. when he was Killed in Action - Wellington BK165 was the group's first loss. It was also the aircraft with Maddison on board.

Pilot Officer George Milne and his crew - 5 Canadians and 1 Englishman (Maddison) all died when their Wellington was lost in the Bay of Biscay on 14.1.1943. It is thought that they were shot down by flak and lost without trace. 

He is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey.
