Arthur Austin was born in 1914. He joined the RAMC in October 1938, serving in Palestine with the 2/3 Cavalry Ambulance for which he was awarded the GSM Palestine. He later saw service in the Middle East and was taken POW at the fall of Tobruk on 20 June 1942 whilst attached to 11 Commando, C Bn Layforce.

The Wigan Observer of 7 November 1942 carried an article which read as follows:

"Mr and Mrs Austin of the Infirmary Lodge, Wigan have been informed that their youngest son, Corporal Arthur Austin, of the RAMC, who was reported missing on 20th June at Tobruk is now a prisoner in Italian hands. He is 28 years of age and has been overseas since October 1938."
