Louis Friedlander, a man of the Jewish faith, was born in the Transvaal in 1919. Having attested for service with the Imperial Light Horse on 7.6.1938 he was already accustomed to a uniform when WWII broke out 2 years later. Volunteering for full-time service on 20.4.1940 he was in action with the ILH in North Africa, earning the 8th Army clasp to his Africa Star in and around El Alamein in October 1942.
He joined 3/17 (Rhodesia Battery) and saw service with them until transferring to the 1/6 Field Regiment South African Artillery with whom he fought in Italy from 7.10.1943 until 7 June 1945.
Having served for 12 years and 5 days he was eligible for the Efficiency Medal which was awarded to him on 20. 12.1946. The medal was posted to him at 22 Darby Road, Bertrams, Johannesburg.
