P/J 144945 AB Francis Henry Vernalls. Born Pontyridd Glamorgan 14.2.1915 Fell overboard HMS Caledon Gibraltar Harbour 5.6.1944 in what was described as "By drowning following fall from ship."
Vernalls, according to a 1.7.1939 newspaper article, "Francis Vernalls, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Tom Vernalls, 3 Church Street, Llandbradach is now home on leave after being stationed aboard H.M.S. Penelope. Mr Vernalls was for four years stationed in China Waters and also in Palestine."
He had married in 1941 and was survived by his wife Mabel and his parents.
He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
