PLY.10324 Pte. Henry Gammon was born in Barnstaple, Devon on 3.9.1881 He enlisted with the Royal Marine Light Infantry on 18.9.1899 and was discharged by purchase on 19.5.1909 transferring to the Royal Fleet Reserve.
Recalled for WWI service he spent most of the war (other than when on Shore Establishments) aboard HMS Isis, a 2nd Class Cruiser of 5600 tons and part of the 11th Cruiser Squadron, West of Ireland Coastal Patrol. They captured a German merchantman on 10.8.1914 whereafter they served in North America as part of the West Indies Fleet until 1918. He was awarded the LSGCM in November 1921. He had become a Postman in July 1914 and resumed this occupation after discharge.
According to the 1939 Register Gammon was an Established Postman living at 102 South Street, Barnstaple. Interestingly his date of birth is given as 6.11.1881.
He passed away in Worcester on 13.3.1963.
