George Edward Ogilvie was born on 25.9.1906. He enlisted with the Merchant Navy on 19.6.1924, serving with the Royal Navy Reserve in WWII.

He was taken POW on 4.4.1941 when the Armed Merchant Cruiser, HMS Voltaire he was aboard was on patrol in the central Atlantic when it was spotted by the German raider Thor. The two ships opened fire on each other, and Voltaire was ablaze by 0649 hours. The ship sank shortly afterwards, with 75 dead and 197 survivors rescued by the Germans.

Ogilvie was Wounded in Action in the Right Thigh and, as a POW, was held at Marlag/Milag. He apparently tried to escape but failed in the attempt.

He passed away in Claro, North Yorkshire in December 1991.
