Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal (BANDMR E. ANDREWS. QUEENSN. R.VOL.)

Edward Andrews was an interesting man - he weas born in the East End of London on 13 December 1855 and, at the age of 15, joined the 1st Royal Scots regiment in 1870, serving with them in Malta and the West Indies over a 19 year military career which ended when he took his discharge in South Africa in 1889.

While serving with them in Eshowe, Zululand in 1889 he was Wounded in what was termed a local accident. 

He moved with his family to the Eastern Cape, taking up residence in Queenstown from where, in 1896, he took part in the Bechuanaland Campaign - a small-scale war where the Militia were called out to suppress an armed rebellion by Galeshewe and his tribe in the Langeberg. This after the the Colonial Government had slaughtered all cattle in an attempt to contain the outbreak of Rinderpest in the region.

Andres served as the Band Master of the Queenstown Rifle Volunteers and is confirmed on the roll for the Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal, authority for the award of which was only granted by Queen Victoria in 1900.

He passed away at the hospital in Kimberley, Cape Colony at the age of 66 on 4 March 1921 (malignant stricture of the oesophagus - his address was 37 Bultfontein Road and his occupation, Musician.

Medal is in good condition unless indicated otherwise. Sold with copy service papers and some additional research.
