India Mutiny Medal clasp Central India (WM. MULLAY. 83RD REGT.)
William Mallay (note the spelling) was born in Ireland in 1815. He enlisted with the 83rd Regt (1st Royal Irish Rifles) in 1849 and saw service in the Indian Mutiny, earning the medal with Central India clasp - the clasp for 'Central India' was awarded to personnel involved in the operations in Jhansi, Kalpi, Gwalior and Rajputana between January and June 1858. He was not wounded in any of the actions in which he was involved - this is confirmed by a comment in his service papers.
The Army Lists have him at Karachi in Pakistan with his regiment in 1851. He must have returned to the UK before going back east because he married Catherine McDade in Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1854. He later transferred to the Royal Artillery No.4 Battery, 7th Brigade, and saw service with them from 1861. He took his discharge after 21 years service at Woolwich on 10 November 1870. He was once Court Martialled denying him the right to a LSGCM.
According to the 1871 Scotland census her was living at 464 Duke St, Glasgow and was a Foundry Labourer by occupation.
He died in Glasgow in 1873
