British War Medal (LIEUT. J.S. WILTON)
John Staines Wilton was born into a prosperous Saddlery & Harness Maker family on 17 February 1874. He was awarded the Freedom of the City of London on 18 May 1911 (in the Company of Saddlers)
Already 44 years old he was commissioned a Lieutenant in the London Gazette of 16 July 1918 for duty with the Army Ordnance Department and served in India with effect from 14 August 1918. The British War Medal is his sole entitlement.
Wilton died in Oxford Street, London on 6 May 1936 and, in an article in the Daily Express of 7 July 1936, under the heading, Proved Wrong, the reporter wrote:
"Yes, you would be quite wrong. Mr John Staines Wilton of Oxford Street and Hill Road, St John's Wood, could have proved you wrong - to the extent of £46 000.
Saddlery and harness making was his job in life - and that was the fortune he left when he died last May. He made many bequests to employees of his still flourishing business in Oxford Street. The horse-riding age has not gone, even if the horse transport age is going."
Medal is in good condition unless otherwise indicated. Sold with research.
