Victory Medal (13347 PTE. B. MASON. W.RID.R.)
Bertie Mason was born in Otley, Yorkshire on 5 April 1888. A Clerk by occupation he enlisted for service with the 9th Battalion, West Riding Regiment on 5 September 1914. He was posted to France on 15 July 1915 and was at some point transferred to the Leicestershire Regiment with no. 4793.
Mason, according to a Medical Report conducted on 8 August 1917, had both legs crushed at St Eloi on 27 February 1916.
The report read that, " During a bombardment he was buried for about 1 hour. Both legs were crushed. The tibia was fractured. Treated at 2 General Hospital, Le Havre and then at 1 Birmingham War Hospital. Returned to light duty August 1916 - transferred to Class W, December 1916. He has since worked at his old job (Asst. Manager, Otley Gas Works)"
Mason was awarded a pension and discharged on 10 August 1917. According to the 1939 Register he was living at 9 Newall Mount, Otley and was a Cashier. Unmarried, he was living with his sister. He died in 1955.
Medal is in good condition unless indicated otherwise. Also entitled to a 1914-15 Star and British War Medal which is not included.
