Donald Nicolson was from Kirkcaldy in Scotland. He enlisted with the Royal Artillery in 1940 and saw service in North Africa and Italy with a Heavy Anti Aircraft battalion. He was discharged on 16.1.1946 whilst serving with the Argylly & Sutherland Highlanders. His WWII medals were posted to him on 2 May 1949 to 185 High St Kirkcaldy Fife Scotland.

Nicolson continued on with the military transferring to the Royal Army Service Corps in 1961 and to the Royal Corps of Transport in 1966. He was awarded the Efficiency Medal when a Sergeant with the RA on 31 May 1955. A first bar to the EM was awarded in 1961 and a 2nd bar in 1966 when he was serving with the Royal Corps of Transport.

He was awarded the British Empire Medal in the LG of 31 December 1977 - described as "Lately Caretaker, Territorial, Auxiliary and Volunteer Reserve Centre, Dunfermline, Ministry of Defence."
