Sydney Simmons was born in Chelsea, London in about 1868. A Clock Maker by trade, he enlisted for service with the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers on 26 September 1892 and, after a period at Home, served in India, Singapore, Gibraltar and Sudan Campaign where he earned the Queens Sudan Medal and Khedive's Medal for the action around Khartoum.

He was further engaged in the occupation of Crete in 1898 and, after returning to England, was dispatched with his regiment to South Africa on 16 September 1899 - on the eve of the outbreak of the Anglo Boer War. He fought in the Western Theatre, on the way to relieve Kimberley, and was engaged in the epic battles of Belmont, and Modder River before seeing service in the Orange Free State and Transvaal.

He was Mentioned in Kitchener's Dispatch of 29 July 1902 and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry during the war, published in the LG 31 October 1902 under the name 3535 Pte S. Simmons (Symons), Army Order 10/03.

He was discharged to the 5th battalion in 1903 and to the Reserve in 1908
