Stoker Frank Anthony Tyler RFR Awarded DSM 16/08/1940 for Withdrawal of troops from Dunkirk on board HMS Scimitar which collided with the destroyer Icarus.
Born in Southwark, London on 13 October 1904 Tyler entered the service of the Royal Navy and was transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve before the outbreak of WWII. He was aboard HMS Scimitar as a Leading Stoker when the evacuation of the BEF from the beaches of Dunkirk became a pressing necessity. This took place over nine days from the 26th May until 4th June with the men on the beach and the vessels coming to their aid under constant fire and bombardment from the air and land.
During the confusion Scimitar collided with HM Destroyer Icarus on 31 May 1940 and was grounded with damage to her propellers. Tyler was one of those awarded the DSM for assisting with the withdrawal of troops from Dunkirk - a feat unrivalled in history and one which enabled Britain to continue the war.
He passed away in Merton, Greater London in April 1973.
