Ralph Alan Oscroft Smith was born in Exeter in 1897. He joined up for service in WWI and was commissioned a Lieutenant with the 14th Bn Gloucestershire Regiment on 25.7.1915. He was sent to France on 1.2.1916 and was twice MID - on 23.5.18 and 27.12.1918. His Military Cross was awarded in the Birthday Honours List of 3.6.1918.
Not satisfied that he had done enough, he continued to serve with his beloved Devon Regiment in WWII - this was coupled with a spell of service with "2" Battery, (Gloucestershire) Anti Aircraft from 7 December 1942 until 31 December 1944. His WWII medals were posted to him on 11 October 1948, addressed to Little Hayes, Bishopsteignton, South Devon.
He died in Exeter in 1954.
