Military Medal GV (42106 SAPR. G.H. GRIFFITHS. 56/FD. COY. R.E.); 1914-15 Star (42106 SPR: G.H. GRIFFITHS. R.E.); British War Medal (42106 SPR. G.H. GRIFFITHS. R.E.); Victory Medal (42106 SPR. G.H. GRIFFITHS. R.E.); National Fire Brigade Medal with Twenty Year clasp (5893 GEORGE H. GRIFFITHS)
George Henry Griffiths was born in Monmouth, Wales on 11 October 1888. A Printer by trade he attested for service with the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers at the age of 25 and was posted to France with the 56th Field Coy Royal Engineers on 30 May 1915. He was listed as Wounded on 5 April 1916 and awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 16 July 1918 (Monmouth).
His award of the MM appears in the Routine Orders by the General Officer Commanding, 3rd Division, dated 21 April 1918 - this was likely for manning the Purple Line on 28 to 29/03/1918.
An article in the South Wales Daily News dated 23 May 1918 states that, "Sapper George Griffiths, son of Mr and Mrs C. Griffiths, 52 Cinderhill Street, Monmouth, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He enlisted in August 1914." The press confusing the DCM with the MM was a common occurence during the war. No trace of a George Griffiths winning the DCM could be found.
A volunteer fireman, he was awarded the National Fire Brigade Medal with twenty year clasp.
Sold with some copied research. The medals are in good condition unless otherwise indicated.
