John Kenneth Owens was a friend to Lord Mountbatten and his wife. Born in Conway, Wales on 21 September 1915 he was destined for great things. Described as the Public School pupil who believed strongly in comprehensive education in county schools, he was Acting Director of Education for Derbyshire in the 1960's, having joined the education department just after the war.
Educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, he reputedly became the youngest Colonel in WWII and was in charge of Army comforts in India and Burma - having first served at Dunkirk with the British Expeditionary Force. He was twice Mentioned in Dispatches for Burma - on 9 May 1946 and 19 September 1946.
Described as a mathematician, a scholar and an intellect he was appointed director of the National Council for Social Services and moved to London. It was here, for this work, that he was awarded the C.B.E. in the Queens Silver Jubilee Honours (LG 10 July 1977)
He died in Derby on 17 September 1987.
