Police Exemplary Long Service Medal EIIR (CH.INSPR. LESLIE D. MAUDSLEY)
Leslie Dean Maudsley wasn't you average Copper. Born in Blackburn on 19 April 1916, he served in WWII as a Lieutenant, commissioned in March 1945, with an Anti Tank Battery of the Royal Artillery, stationed in Burma. According to the 1939 Register, he was a Police Constable living at 140 Royd's Street in Accrington.
His WWII medals were posted to him at 31 Balmoral Road Accrington, Lancs. They are not included.
The Manchester Evening News of 17 October 1964 carried an article headed "Police Chief to be mine host" wherein it was stated:
"Chief Inspector Leslie D Maudsley who retires from Aston-under-Lyne division of the Lancashire police this month is to become a landlord. He will take over the licence of the Burston Inn, Bow, Devon, four miles from Crediton. He joined the force at Accrington in 1936 - later serving in Ashton as a sergeant. Promotion to Inspector took him away from the area but he returned as Chief Inspector three years ago. Married with a teenage son and daughter he served with the 14th Army in Burma as a lieutenant."
Maudsley died in Cornwall in 1994.
