William McLeod was born in Thurso, Caithness on 27 February 1920. A General Labourer, he enlisted for service with the 5th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, seeing service in North Africa, Italy and North West Europe. He was twice Wounded in Action - in July 1944 and on 9 February 1945, during Op Veritable, the push into Germany.
His battalion took part in the Battle of El Alamein in North Africa in October 1942 and then pursued the Afrika Corps across the Middle East to Tunisia. They were next part of the Sicily invasion, returning to Britain thereafter before they landed in Normandy on 6/7 June 1944.
Macleod married in 1946 at which time his fiance's address was 8 Grant Street, Woodside, Aberdeen - the same address that appeared on his CS20 (Application for WWII medals) which were posted to him on 25 August 1950. He was awarded the Efficiency Medal the following year in 1951.
Macleod died in Aberdeen in 2000.
