Born in Clapham, London in 1905, William Fursman enlisted for service with the Royal Artillery at Bloomsbury on 3 July 1924 for a period of 4 years. He was employed at the General Post Office as a Messenger and his address, as per the 1921 census, was 86 Isledon Road, Holloway, London - the same address as provided for his next of kin on attestation.
He was awarded the Efficiency Medal as a Bombardier in the RA in 1937.
Fursman saw service in Africa, Italy and North West Europe in WWII, transferring to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps on 22 September 1942. The war over he was awarded a bar to his Efficiency Medal as a Craftsman with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (R.E.M.E.) in 1947.
He was also the recipient of an Imperial Service Medal 4th Jan 1966 as Postman, Higher Grade, Birmingham. - records show that in 1949 he was employed by the GPO as a Learner Driver in the Supplies section. The 1951 he was a Postman in Birmingham.
