George Leslie Maitland was born in Observatory, Cape Town on Christmas Day 1912. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for service with the Technical Services Corps of the South Africa Army on 30 May 1940 and was mustered to No. 2 Stores Coy, TSC. He was deployed to East Africa against the Italian Army in September 1940 and, after that campaign was concluded, was posted to North Africa/Middle East where he served with TSC Headquarters attached to the 1st South African Division. 

He attended a Camouflage Course in 1943 and went on to serve in Italy from 28 March 1944. He was discharged, after more than 5 years service, in 1945. His address on discharge was 10 Haddon Terrace, Mowbray, Cape Town. He is presumed to have died there in 2001.
