Please note that this DFC has no cipher to the reverse so is used for all issues from 1918 to the present day.

Established in June 1918 and originally worn from a ribbon with horizontal stripes of the same colouring.

The cross is identical from the front for all issues having the appropriate sovereigns cipher on the reverse centre. This replica does not have a cipher on the reverse and is therefore used to represent all issues.

1100 were issued during World War One with 70 recipients receiving a bar and 3 receiving Two bars. A further 130 crosses were awarded during the period 1920-1936 with 20 bars and 4 second bars. The second World War saw the greatest number of awards of the DFC, the majority of which carry the year of award on the lower arm of the cross. During this period, 20,000 crosses, 1550 bars and 42 second bars were awarded making it the most awarded gallantry medal of the war.

A further 65 crosses were awarded between 1948 and 1952. To date less than 300 awards of the cross have been made during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

Bars are indiciated by wearing a rosette on the ribbon when ribbons alone are worn.
