Instituted in 1918 at the same time as the DFC to recognise NCO's and men of the RAF for courage whilst on flying duties. Around 105 medals were awarded during the First World War and 6500 during World War Two, with some 60 second award bars.

Approximately 145 were awarded after 1945. This award was replaced by the DFC in 1993.
