Sylvia Rosalind Van Unen, born Seales, a Third Officer with the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, was born in Hexham, Northumberland in 1917. According to the 1939 Register Van Unen was an Elocution Teacher living at 11 Mayfair Gardens, South Shields, Durham. 

Serving with the RNVR, she met Dutch Naval Officer Ernst Karel Van Unen - they were married on 26 November 1945 at St George's Church, Cullercoats. 

Her husband was died on active service - reported missing drowned as a result of a flying accident on 11 February 1946 - less than 3 months after they married. Van Unen went on to earn a scarce double-issue General Service Medal pair - for service in Malaya and Cyprus. 

She passed away in Dunbar, East Lothian in 2003.
