Miniature Medal.

The DSO issued during the reign of King George VI. Established in 1886 and manufactured entirely of 18ct gold until 1889.

It was intended to reward commissioned officers below field rank, for distinguished service during war for which the VC was inappropriate.

In the review of the honours system in 1993 this was no longer permitted as an award for gallantry and is now bestowed on all ranks for distinguished command. No NCO has yet been awarded it! It cannot be awarded posthumously in line with other Orders.
