Instituted in 1856, this medal was awarded to officers and men of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines for operations against the Russians in the Baltic Sea at the same time as the Crimean War. Additionally around 100 members of the Royal Sappers and Miners engaged in the demolition of Russian fortifications at Bomarsund and Sveaborg received the medal. The medal was in the main issued un-named but many were subsequentlky privately named in various styles. The medals awarded to the Royal Sappers and Miners were officially impressed.
