Awarded during the first Afghan war of 1841-42, to those who took part in the defence of the fort at Kelat-Ghilzie in May 1842.
It is the rarest of the medals for the First Afghan War, no Imperial regiments took part in the defence although 55 European in the service of the HEIC received the medal. It was awarded to 877 native troops.
The ribbon was the standard India ribbon representing an Eastern sky at Sunrise.
