This medal was instituted in 1902 and replaced the earlier East & West Africa medal which by this time had 21 clasps awarded with it.
This medal had 54 years between the first and last clasps awarded with it, it has never formally been ceased but no clasps have been awarded since the Mau Mau campaign of 1952-1956.
