Authorised on 12th April 1858 for the short war with Persia from 5th December 1856 - 1st April 1857.
The first Victoria Cross of the Indian Army was won during this short war by Captain J.A.Wood 28th Bombay Native Infantry. Two other Victoria Crosses were awarded, Lieutenant and Adjutant A.T.Moore 3rd Bombay light Cavalry and Lieutenant J.G.Malcolmson also of 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry.
