Instituted in 1918 at the same time as the DFC to recognise NCO's and men of the RAF for courage whilst on flying duties. Around 105 medals were awarded during the First World War and 6500 during World War Two, with some 60 second award bars.
Flight Sergeant Donald Ernest Kingaby was awarded a second bar to his DFM, recorded in the London Gazette 7th November 1941, the only triple award of the DFM. Later commissioned he was also awarded the DSO and DFC.
This award was replaced by the DFC in 1993.
