Instiututed in 1940 at the same time as the George Cross, the GM was awarded for acts of gallantry that were not deemed to merit the award of the GC. Although primarily intended for civilians it has been awarded in virtually equal numbers to service personnel.
Bars were awarded for subsequent acts that would have resulted in the award of the GM had the recipient not already been in receipt of the medal. This is denoted by a rosette on the ribbon when ribbons alone are worn.
